Oldest undocumented immigrant in US finally gets green card

A Chicago woman who has lived in the United States as an undocumented immigrant for nearly 90 years will finally be receiving an adjustment of status. In 1923, the woman came from Ireland to the United States with her family. It wasn't until tragedy struck her family that woman ran into immigration issues.

Over 10 years ago, the woman's daughter suddenly died and the woman was tasked with raising her seven grandchildren. When she tried to apply for public assistance to help raise the kids, she was declared an "undocumented alien;" thus, she was ineligible for aid. The woman, who was 70 at the time, spent the next decade taking any work she could find to earn a modest living and help raise her grandchildren.

The problem was that the woman did not have a birth certificate or passport when she came to the country that has been her home for decades. Finally, her birth certificate was tracked down with help from a local organization. She will now be able to get an Irish passport and receive a green card from U.S. immigration officials. This will allow her to stay in Chicago as a permanent resident without fear of deportation.

Like many immigrants -- undocumented or not -- the woman considers the United States her home. She has found a place in her community and built a family, which now includes great-grandchildren. Like many others dealing with immigration issues, this woman's case took years to settle.

Dealing with immigration issues can be a confusing and scary experience. If a person does not act quickly enough or in the right fashion, they risk being deported and leaving behind the life they have come to know. As this woman's case shows, there are solutions available for immigration issues. By taking thoughtful steps, issues can be solved in an effective, efficient manner.
