Could misinterpreted discipline cause an immigrant's deportation?

As we have previously discussed on this blog, it seems as though immigration authorities latch onto any reason to begin deportation action, even a minor traffic defense. This is exactly why many Chicago families are on edge each day, knowing that there is a possibility that a loved one could be deported for a minor criminal infraction.

New Illinois license law creates mixed feelings among immigrants

Illinois lawmakers didn't waste time in the new legislative session, as they have already passed a measure that allows undocumented immigrants to legally obtain a temporary driver's license. Passed as a means to improve public safety on the roads, the new law also simplifies a lot of everyday tasks for those without permanent immigration status.

Immigrants risk safety to expose detention center conditions

Immigration hearings often move at a very slow pace, which is why federal officials feel the need to detain undocumented immigrants while they await a deportation trial. Once people are put into a detention center, they may be exposed to conditions that are dangerous or nearly uninhabitable. This is not only true among Illinois immigration detention centers, but it also appears to be an unfortunate national trend.

New federal policy will ease the challenges of family immigration

Many families in the Chicago area understand how difficult it is to deal with inconsistent immigration statuses among loved ones. For example, kids may have U.S. citizenship, but their parents do not; or one spouse has legal status, but the other does not. Not only is the process to obtain a visa inordinately complex, but those who wish to change their status have to leave their loved ones behind and travel back to their home country to submit specific paperwork. That is, until very recently.
