Chicago businessman touts economic benefits of immigration reform

As many Illinois families know, gaining permanent residency or citizenship can produce a wide array of benefits, affecting everything from family dynamics to financial security. This is exactly why so many people are eager to see what emerges from the latest round discussions to change current U.S. immigration laws.

As more and more voices join the call for comprehensive reform, a business leader in Chicago has also emerged as a proponent. John Rowe, chair emeritus of Exelon Corp., has indicated that immigration reform will not only benefit undocumented immigrants, but the effects will be felt throughout the economy.

Rowe recalls a conversation with a teenager who is very gifted, but would not be able to work legally in the United States because of her immigration status. The 16-year-old Chicago resident ranks among the top students in her high school and dreams of being a nuclear engineer. Interestingly enough, undocumented immigrants can attend college in the United States, but can't become legally employed in the country after graduating. If this teenager is able to find a path to legal residency or citizenship, her talents can help drive domestic economic growth.

Not only would immigration reform affect those with high earning potential, but it would positively impact everyone in the working population. If people have job security, they are able to earn wages and pay taxes, which "creates more growth." This, of course, benefits everyone in the country.

As lawmakers debate the recently introduced bi-partisan immigration bill, it will be important to remember how reform could benefit so many families. Although some are motivated to pass the reform legislation this year, many individuals and families will be confronted with immigration issues before any changes go into effect. For those in need of answers, an experienced legal professional can help find a way forward.
