Joliet immigration detention center plan raises concerns

The city of Joliet is currently mulling a proposal to bring a private detention center within city limits. Already, the city has been in contact with officials from the Department Immigration and Customs Enforcement and a private firm that runs similar facilities throughout the country. Although some within the local government are keen on seeing the proposal move forward, others in the community have raised concerns.

In general, immigration detention centers are used to house individuals who are awaiting a deportation hearing. The problem is that people spend months in these facilities without appearing in court and are often exposed to dangerous conditions. When news of this Illinois proposal surfaced, many worried that it would do irreparable damage to the local immigrant community.

Responding to criticism of the plan, officials from the Will County city said that it is their goal to help develop the local economy and bringing a detention center into town would do just that. At this point, the project is still being discussed and nothing has been finalized.

Being held in a detention center is obviously a scary prospect. There is a good chance that individuals are separated from their loved ones and their community for months at a time and may never be able to return if they are deported. This can obviously create a serious quandary for families who may become separated by international borders.

Knowing the complex nature of immigration laws and the slow speed at which requests are processed by immigration officials, it is of the utmost importance to respond to the threat of deportation quickly. By gaining an understanding of your rights, it may be possible to avoid the financial and emotional hardship created by the sudden deportation of a loved one.
