Scary encounter puts Chicago family on path to immigration visas

One common experience among undocumented immigrants in the United States is the fear that officials could initiate deportation proceedings for almost any reason, at almost any time. As a result, some families refrain from communicating with public safety officials, even when it is in their best interests. This is exactly what kept one Chicago family from coming forward about an instance of police misconduct.

Shortly after a 13-year-old boy was illegally detained by police in the dead of night, his family went into hiding. Even though Chicago officers committed a home invasion, the boy's loved ones didn't want to risk being deported back to Mexico after living in the U.S. for over two years. A police investigation into the incident, however, caused them to come forward with their story. Fortunately, they were all awarded an adjustment of status.

The boy, now a 21 year old man, and his family learned about the option to seek a U-visa, which is designed to "encourage the victims of serious, often violent crimes to come forward without fear of deportation." Although it is certainly a relief that the family was finally able to go public with their horrifying experience without negative consequences, it's unfortunate that they had to go through the ordeal to get to this point.

This case reveals how critical it is for undocumented immigrants to become aware of their rights. In addition to finding out about special programs, such as the U-visa, individuals can learn about getting a visa and onto the path of citizenship with the right advice. Gaining legal status allows families to remain in their communities and live from day to day without the overwhelming concern of being deported.
