Report: US, Cuba may be opening up immigration negotiations

For the last several decades, the relationship between the United States and Cuba has been nothing short of complicated. As the result of long-standing Cold War policies, the federal government has maintained a very unique policy for Cuban immigrants. Individuals who make the short trek by water from Cuba to the U.S. and successfully make it to land are allowed to remain in the country. However, if they are caught by authorities before hitting American soil, they're typically sent back to Cuba.

After many years of a standstill, an official from the Department of State indicated that the two countries are looking to reopen negotiations that could have serious implications for U.S. immigration law and people living in Chicago. It's expected that representatives from both countries will meet in July to begin looking at the long-standing policy that allows 20,000 Cubans to receive visas annually.

Any major changes in policy could meet resistance, since this is still a politically sensitive issue for many people. Whatever the case, word that the United States is interested in resuming negotiations with Cuba could signal a shift in policy, which has already begun to evolve over the last few years.

This news serves as a reminder of how many families are currently split up between various countries -- not just Cuba and the United States. Trying to navigate the immigration system alone may feel nearly impossible. It's true that many aspects of the process to obtain a visa or citizenship are confusing and frustrating, but a trustworthy attorney might be able to help clear some road blocks. In the long run, however, the hope is that considerations are made to help families torn apart as the result of an inability to obtain a legal immigration status.
