Immigration bill includes "point system" for employment visas

As the economy continues along a path toward recovery, Chicago companies will be looking to hire the most qualified people for job openings. Under current immigration laws, many qualified individuals are excluded from jobs because they are unable to obtain a work visa.

Immigration reform proposals have been a topic of frequent discussion on this blog and in the halls of Congress. In late June 2013, the U.S. Senate offered a comprehensive immigration bill that included -- among many other things -- a revision of the way employment-based visas are awarded.

Unlike the current process for obtaining legal immigration status for employment, the new proposal includes a merit-based system. If the proposal is passed and signed into law, it would create a process for evaluating workers in both white-collar and blue-collar sectors. Using a variety of factors and qualifications, each applicant is given a point value. Those who are ranked highest are awarded green cards.

Observers note that many employers have indicated that they don't have sufficient access to skilled labor from other countries, which is an important economic issue. In addition to revising the process for employment immigration, the new law would also expand the number of visas approved each year.

Although there are certainly important economic implications tied up in immigration reform, it's truly personal for many families. Being allowed to work in the United States represents a tremendous opportunity for many individuals. As such, the hope is that they are able to navigate the details of immigration laws in order to realize these opportunities.
