Migration talks may ease tension between U.S. and Cuba

Many individuals dream of the day they can come to America to live. Whether the visit is temporary for work, vacation, or education, or if the party desires to make the stay more permanent through marriage or in hopes of obtaining US citizenship through naturalization, it is important for one to familiarize his or herself with US immigration laws.

Many Cubans may now want to do this as talks centered on migration between the United States and Cuba continues, thawing their once frigid relationship. Currently, the U.S. accepts about 20,000 Cubans into the country through legal forms of immigration. Also, under a policy known as the "wet foot, dry foot policy," Cubans who are able to make it to U.S. shores are allowed to stay while those who are caught at sea trying to make the voyage are turned back.

Last year, nearly 25,000 visas were issued to Cuban immigrants. On top of that, the number of visitor visas more than doubled last year to nearly 30,000. Knowing how to obtain a visa and comply with it may be the best way to avoid deportation and work towards naturalization, should one so desire. An immigration attorney can assist those seeking a visa or a visa renewal fill out the necessary forms to prevent deportation.

Likewise, an attorney can help lawful permanent residents seek naturalization, should they choose. Typically, for an immigrant to become a naturalized citizen, he or she must be 18 years of age or older, have been admitted to the U.S. for permanent residence, have resided continuously in the country for five years, be of good moral character, and support the U.S. Constitution. Many of these terms, like permanent residence, can have complex legal meanings. Therefore, it may be in an immigrants best interest to seek legal assistance from a Naperville attorney to ensure he or she knows what steps must be taken to achieve citizenship.
