New study shows extent of abuse for Mexican detainees

There are two underlying themes to the immigration debate that make this issue such a contentious matter. The first is that we still don't have a clear and agreed upon solution to create an immigration system that works. Right now we many undocumented people living in the country, most of who are harmless and simply want to live in America. Some of these people were brought here as kids, and have little or no allegiance to their former home country.

These people are simply trying to make a better life for themselves. Yes, going through the U.S. immigration system properly is always the best way to go about status issues; but there are gray areas, like we just mentioned.

The second theme is that undocumented people are treated very poorly, and that when they are detained, the conditions they suffer through are truly abhorrent. There have been many stories that center on this topic -- and now we have another one, thanks to a report from the Immigration Policy Center. The study found that many Mexican detainees who are held by U.S. border authorities are physically and verbally abused. In addition, many people who are detained have their possessions taken away from them, and they aren't returned.

Just because someone is not from the United States does not mean they should be abused or harmed. These aren't "lesser people." They are people, and they deserve to be treated as such. Detained immigrants still have rights, even though they are not citizens of the country.
