Granting citizenship to immigrants may enhance U.S. security

This blog's Illinois readers know that there have been many posts on this site pertaining to the ongoing efforts of Congress and the Obama Administration to reform of this country's immigration laws.

Some are now suggesting that immigration reform would improve this country's national security. The face of the military is changing in the wake of steep cuts in the defense budget. While the number of soldiers is expected to decline over the next several months and years, the military plans to invest in new technology that could help maintain the United States' military edge over many other countries in the world.

Some argue that this will require the United States to invest in the lives of people from all over the world who have talent and expertise in math and science. These people will be key in developing new defense technology that is necessary to protect the country.

In this respect, both the Administration and the Congress seem to agree that United States immigration laws should be liberalized enough to allow these talented individuals both to study in the United states and to eventually obtain United States citizenship after their studies are complete. These immigrants could provide a valuable service to their new country. Hopefully, this country's leaders will be able to resolve their outstanding differences so that a comprehensive immigration reform package can be signed into law.

In the mean time, those immigrants who wish to remain in the United States and apply their talent and time to the service of their new country may have options available to them. A skilled immigration attorney may be able to inform them of these options, explain the application process and offer other helpful assistance.
