Citizenship for Illinois immigrants who serve will have to wait

Although the DREAM Act has at least given some Illinois immigrants a respite from their fears that they will be deported, the path to permanent citizenship in the United State may prove to be a long way off, even for those Illinois immigrants who voluntarily serve in this country's armed forces.

While some consider immigrants who volunteer for military duty to be the most "sympathetic" group of immigrants, who have perhaps the most compelling case for citizenship, a recent effort to afford them that possibility recently failed in the U.S. House of Representatives. One congressman attempted to create a procedure under which military volunteers could become U.S. citizens as part of a budget measure that would ensure funding to the military.

The measure failed to pass and was referred to committee, where it appears likely that the measure will die. Some of those opposed to the measure question why the United States would want to admit into the military those who choose to break the law, while others suggested that immigrants who signed up for the military may have questionable loyalties. It should be noted, though, that the DREAM Act only protects those who were brought to this country as small children.

Even without immigration reform, immigrants who desire to lead productive and otherwise law-abiding lives may still be able to achieve naturalization by other means. Particularly when it comes to those who want to serve this country, an experienced immigration attorney may be able to offer valuable assistance in finding a way for Illinois immigrants to make the United States their new and permanent home.
