Computer glitch currently crippling immigration proceedings

The detention cases of immigrant in immediate danger of deportation both in the area of Chicago, Illinois, and around the country are currently in the midst of a mounting backlog due to a serious problem with the national computer network.

Courts and lawyers across the country rely on this network in order to keep their proceedings moving forward and now those facing deportation and their families also are having to deal with a court system that is trying to adjust by using older methods of keeping records and regulating court proceedings. The system is scheduled to remain down for another two weeks while replacement parts are being shipped.

Some immigrants have taken advantage of this technology snafu; one man convinced federal authorities that he had appealed his deportation order and thus was able to avoid a flight back to his native country. The man has a history of evading immigration authorities.

Nevertheless, for most immigrants, the process may prove quite frustrating, because it is slowing proceedings down. In some cases, immigrants may be able to argue that because of the delays, the principles of due process demand that they should be released from immigration detention.

In addition to making the work of the immigration courts in Illinois and around the country more difficult, the glitch is also making it harder for immigration attorneys who are advocating for their clients to keep tabs on their cases. Because of the computer problem, attorneys cannot confirm their cases either online or via a toll-free hotline and must simply await communication from the courts.

Hopefully, this problem will be fixed soon so that the courts can begin digging out of the backlog that this issue has created. Immigrants in Chicago, Illinois, who have been affected by this breakdown may wish to consult with their immigration attorneys if they have any questions.
