Silicon Valley companies to chart own immigration path?

Chicago immigrants and their families may want to pay attention to some recent rumblings in the nation's capital. Tech conglomerates such as Google and Microsoft may be backing away from the initial support of a far-reaching immigration reform package that is currently stalled in the House of Representatives. Instead, the companies may pursue their own, limited reform that would address business immigration and give the companies a broader pool of potential employees.

The goal of the technology industry is to see legislation passed that would allow them to hire more employees who come from other countries. This may mean that more professionals educated in science and technology would be welcome into this country under work visas. However, without a comprehensive reform package, it may mean little for the vast majority of people trying to enter this country or the more than 12 million immigrants already in the United States without legal documentation.

The technology industry has downplayed this issue as little more than a rumor and has reiterated its commitment to the broad reforms that have passed the Senate. Nonetheless, the concern that the technology giants would take their own path to immigration reform prompted a letter from Illinois Senator Richard Durbin to the leaders of the major technology corporations. Senator Durbin urged the industry to remain committed to broad immigration reform.

How the current efforts at immigration reform will eventually shape out into new laws remains to be seen. Chicago immigrants should keep a close watch on all developments. Meanwhile, those who have current immigration issues should feel free to speak with an immigration law attorney about their cases.
